Pet Food
The Hill Country SPCA wants to be sure that no one has to give up his or her beloved pet ever, and especially now, when limited resources make it hard to cover even the essentials. We have stocked up our food bank to ensure that you have the food you need for your dogs or cats.
We’ve made it easy to get what you need. Simply fill out the request below, or send us an email at info@hillcountryspca.com with your name, number and type of pets and when you plan to swing by the shelter to pick up the food. On the day and time you specified, we’ll set your food, identified with your name, outside of the side door of our facility (to your left facing the building). If you are unable to come to the shelter, let us know and we will deliver the food to you.

Renting with Pets
Finding a landlord that allows pets can be difficult, Even if a landlord advertises “no pets,” some will make exceptions. It is worth asking over the phone or in person with friendly conversation, and being prepared in advance can also help!
Show off your pets best qualities!
One of the best ways to convince a potential landlord that your pet is not going to be a nuisance, or be destructive to the property, is to show them how you are a responsible pet owner, and how well behaved your pet is!

Rehoming Assistance
If you feel that you are out of options and finding a new home is best for your pet, we encourage you to try re-homing your pet on your own rather than surrendering to our facility, and we’re here to help!
To post your pet on our website, you will need to fill out a Courtesy Post below, and we highly reccomend doing so on Rehome.AdoptaPet.com as well. This will also allow hundreds of potential adopters to view your pet on "Adopt-A-Pet"! The Rehome website can help you handle the adoption process, provide access to safe meeting places at Petco stores. We do also recommend trying social media, flyers, and newspaper articles. |
Community Cat Assistance
Community cats, sometimes called free-roaming or feral cats, are common in the Hill Country. In order to help our area achieve a no-kill community, some cats are spayed/neutered and returned to the location at which they were found. This program is called “Trap Neuter Return” or “TNR” for short. Fredericksburg offers the following options for TNR:
Frequently Asked Questions about Community Cats and TNR: What is the difference between a community cat and a stray cat? Stray cats are former pets who are lost or have been abandoned outdoors. Community cats, or feral cats, are unsocialized cats that are not adoptable and are free-roaming outdoor cats. They often live in a colony with other community cats and have one or more caretakers who feed them. All community cats should be spayed or neutered. How can I tell if a cat is a community cat or if it has been spayed/neutered? Look for a missing tip on the cat’s ear. The “eartip” is a universal sign that a cat has been altered. It can be either ear. It is the humane removal of the tip of a cat’s ear to indicate is has been spayed or neutered. How can I help community cats? The best thing you can do for a community cat is get him or her fixed via a Trap Neuter Return program. After the cat is fixed, you can continue feeding on a regular basis. We strongly recommend speaking to property owners before you begin feeding a community cat. |
Lost or Found Pets
City of Fredericksburg Animal Control is responsible for the intake of strays in Fredericksburg, since Gillespie County does not have an animal control facility there are no pickup options, however strays can be taken into the city shelter. Any animal found as a stray MUST be taken to the shelter servicing that area, for many reasons, but primarily so the animal can find their way back home.
Hill Country SPCA can take in strays on very a limited basis, generally only those who are too young to be at animal control, or those that are injured are considered.
If you have lost a pet, please contact your local animal control agency. If you believe we have your missing pet, bring appropriate ID and proof of animal ownership (medical records and photographs) of the animal to the HCSPCA as soon as possible. Pets have a 3 day stray hold at HCSPCA and will be available for adoption after the third day.
