If your cat has already had a litter of kittens, get them on our waiting
list as soon as possible. With the sudden Kitten
Baby Boom, our shelter will be FLOODED with kittens and it may take
a few weeks to get them in, so the sooner they are on the waiting list, the
sooner we can get them in. We cannot take kittens younger than 6 weeks
of age into the shelter for adoption, but they can be put on our waiting
list before then!
What do you do if you FIND kittens? First of all WAIT, don't move
them!
Step
back and keep an eye out to see if their Momma comes back, 95% of the time
she is just off finding food and will come back! Kittens need to be
with their Momma for at least 6 weeks. If they are taken away from her
before they are 6 weeks of age, they need to be bottle fed! Which takes
alot of time, energy and commitment. If you believe they have been
abandoned by their Mother, check out this link for how to bottle feed a kitten: http://www.2ndchance.info/orphankitten.htm.
The HCSPCA CANNOT take kittens younger than 6 weeks, we do not have enough
staff or volunteers to bottle feed kittens. If you are interested
in being a foster home to bottle fed kittens, PLEASE call the shelter at
830-990-9085 or email Erica@hillcountryspca.com
If
you believe the kittens are close to 6 weeks of age,
you can start feeding them wet food and get them on our waiting list. (See
how to "age" a kitten at: http://cats.about.com/od/kittencare/ss/track6weeks.htm .)
The HCSPCA can only take in friendly and tame kittens. If you have feral
kittens, you can work on taming them with some tips from this site: http://www.feralcat.com/taming.html. If
you find that the kittens are too old to be tamed, trap them and get them
fixed (vouchers are available for FREE spay/neuter services!). Cats
and kittens can be fixed as long as they are over 2 pounds!
As soon as the mother stops nursing her kittens, you can get her fixed! The
HCSPCA offers free rental of live traps (first come, first served) to help
trap/neuter/release feral cats. You can also call PAWS at 830-990-1018
for information/help on their trap/neuter program.
It is imperative
to stop the cycle! Female
cats can get pregnant again anytime. Sometimes they come into
heat a few days after giving birth, however, it is best to have her spayed
AFTER she is finished nursing her kittens (no sooner than 6 weeks!).
If you have any questions about a litter of kittens you found, or about
getting cats spayed/neutered, feel free to call us at 830-990-9085.
