Animals Fostered

What our supporters say

  • I would give 10 stars if I could! HCSPCA places a big emphasis on making sure the animal in need gets put in the best matched home. We had a great experience with adopting Jerry (now Bandit) and would definitely go through them again if we decide to adopt another dog.

    -Katie

  • Everything went extremely smooth-picked her up - she was ready to go as well as her stuff for the foster.

    - Rozanne

  • People always ask me why I adop from Fredericksburg’s SPCA. I have adopted two dogs four years apart from them. The shelter is always spotlessly clean. The staff is always exceptionally competent and friendly. They have always been able to accurately describe the characteristics of the dogs I am just interested in. Both dogs have good manners and hood personalities. I love their ads of their animals. Their t -shirts are cute too!

    -Donna

  • Everyone at the shelter was so kind. We were an hour early for our appointment, but they went ahead and got the dog that we came to visit. And when my dad said that he would go ahead and take him home everybody cheered! Wonderful group of people.

    -Karen

  • I have adopted 4 animals from this shelter. 3 cats and now a puppy. The staff are super friendly and helpful and answer any questions or concerns you have. They have made it a wonderful experience to adopt from a shelter. 10/10

    -Desiree

  • The ladies there were so nice and you could tell they really love the pups. The adoption process was easy and the approval didn’t take long at all.

    -Lori

  • All of the staff are very easy to work with for adopting and fostering. They really do a great job of nurturing the animals. Its so nice, clean and peaceful to visit. Give them a try if you are looking for an addition to your family!

    -Allie

  • Our kids are getting older and we decided we wanted to get them a new pet cat(s) We had been looking for a perfect cat(s) for several weeks when we finally found this place. They were super understanding and helped us through the process of adoption. Wonderful friendly people. We ended up adopting 2 kittens and probably a 3rd in the next couple weeks. <3 The process was very easy and straight forward. Super happy to have adopted from Hill Country SPCA.

    -Desiree

  • I'm so impressed. And I cannot thank Stevie enough for guiding me through each step of yalls fostering process and all the way through to foster supplies. She has been a huge help! I'm very impressed by this rescue and the staff.

    -Patricia

  • Excellent, smooth, informative pick up. Staff was so friendly and helpful. All fostering supplies ready for us. Wonderful smooth transition. Thanks for all that you do!

    -Michelle

  • Happiness is receiving a new pet from SPCA-- Fredericksburg. The Care and Love shown by staff is exceptional. Brioche was welcomed into our family today. She is a treasure and received much love from our former SPCA dogs(Abuela & Drumplin). We love them all. They were all so cared for by SPCA staff. I would only adopt from them as the love and care is exceptional.

    -Carole

  • We were so excited when we got the news that we were approved to adopt Finnegan, now Rocky. The Hill Country SPCA facility is extremely clean and well maintained. In fact, it even smelled nice, which is amazing considering the amount of rescues they care for on a daily basis. The staff who assisted with the adoption shared the background on Rocky and provided all the medical records. They also helped us with introductions between Rocky and Sandy, our terrier. We are very fortunate to have such competent, compassionate people running a very nice shelter in the Hill Country. Rocky has only been in his new home a few hours, but he is already fitting in and we are so happy!

    -Ron & Judy

  • This is the most amazing animal shelter, the best I have seen! These animals are truly loved. The facility is stellar and the staff are kind and friendly. Highly recommend.

    - Christina & Ella

  • The SPCA staff was knowledgeable about the animals and their needs and so sweet and helpful. This was such a wonderful experience and even though we just got forest today, we are so over the moon in love. They allowed us privacy and plenty of time to meet him and make sure our granddaughter wasn’t afraid of him. I highly recommend looking for a fur ever friend at one of the area shelters. They have wonderful animals and care for them deeply. Forest is our second shelter pup and I have to say, it has been a great and rewarding experience. If we ever get a fur friend for forest ( say that ten times real fast ) we will definitely be back to adopt from a shelter or rescue. Thanks again to the staff for giving us the love of this amazing little guy.

    -Tanya

  • Picked up our newest family member, Cozumel now called Rune, yesterday. I loved how easy the whole process was and how incredibly professional the staff was. They really anticipated EVERY SINGLE QUESTION I had. I have a tendency to be OCD with my animals and their care so to find someone who is the same way was much appreciated!

    -Judy

    -Jessica

  • Sweet Tobias came home with me today! Hill Country SPCA made the process so easy. I was contacted the same day I completed the application even though it was the end of their week. They adjusted schedules so he was ready to come home on the day we met because I had a long drive. The atmosphere is so calm and the staff so gentle, the animals seemed less stressed than at other shelters I have visited. Thank you for helping me connect with my new best friend.

    -Marie

  • I adopted a dachshund mix from Hill Country SPCA. They were very responsive to phone calls, answering questions, and having everything ready when I picked her up. I looked at just about every shelter in an 80 miles radius from me and they had the best choice of dogs at their facility. I was impressed with the staff and the facility!

    -Martha

  • Had a wonderful experience adopting from Hill Country SPCA in Fredericksburg TX . A very nice facility and staff. Highly recommend

    -Julie

  • We adopted our new pup (new name TBD) from Hill Country SPCA. Very friendly staff, and they knew the pup I was calling about, and his personality traits, without even pulling his name up. And they gave us plenty of time with our current dog to have a meet and greet, and determine if the combination was a good fit. Thanks ladies!!

    -Hollie

  • SPCA Fredericksburg is a well run organization with friendly service and adorable dogs! They care about their animals and their facility was a pleasant experience.

    -Alexa

  • We had a wonderful experience adopting our new puppy. You can tell they are so sweet, attentive and caring to the animals. They were very responsive and friendly-made the process so easy!

    -Alis

  • I was impressed with the cleanliness and quietness of the facility. I am so used to hearing barking and strong odors at other facilities that I have been to, so that was my immediate reaction. The girls were helping other folks when I got there, but I did not have to wait long before I got to meet Ernie in an indoor room. I spent a few minutes there and then walked him outside. I spent about 30 minutes out there and discovered that he is definitely an outdoor dog and that his nose had not been exercised. At any rate, we went back inside and I asked a few questions about his health, which the staff promptly answered. I quickly realized that I could not turn my back on him, so I signed a foster / adoption agreement and they helped me get him into my car. I had forgotten to ask them if they knew of a place where I could grab a bite to eat with an outdoor patio. They recommended Tubby's, I went there, and the waitress (Marie) loved Ernie and I told her that I had just rescued him. After I ate the best lunch I had had in long time, Marie came up to me and hugged me and told me that the meal was on them. I have been dealing with a lot of grief, not Good Grief!

    -Bill

  • Upon walking into facility I was quite impressed- The staff were friendly, helpful, & caring The entire atmosphere was pleasant- one could sense they cared for the animals

  • The caring people at the Fredericksburg Hill Country SPCA were so sweet and helpful to us. They introduced us to Teddy and we had a prefect match! They helped me with my online application and even tho we had freezing temperatures, they waited for us to get there to drop out Teddy for his doctor appointment. I even got to pet a bearded dragon!! Thanks a million to everyone...tag wags and sloppy kisses :)

    -Linda

  • Such a fun place to visit, they really do take care of their animals that are there in the shelter. I was really thinking about fostering and volunteering and after visiting I came home with the sweetest little dog to foster his name is Toto. Becoming a foster for an animal shelter is a rewarding and fulfilling experience. By opening your home and heart to a shelter animal in need, you have the power to change their life for the better. As a foster, you provide a safe and loving environment where they can heal, grow, and learn to trust again. Whether it's an abandoned kitten, a shy dog, or a recovering surgery patient, fostering allows you to make a significant impact on their journey towards finding their forever homes. Being a foster is about making a difference, one precious life at a time.

Volunteer

Are you passionate about making a difference in the lives of animals? Consider becoming a volunteer at our shelter. As a volunteer, you will have the unique opportunity to contribute your time and skills towards the welfare of animals in need. Whether you become a dog walker, a cat cuddler, or assist with administrative tasks, your presence and support will go a long way in creating a nurturing and loving environment for the animals.

Upcoming Events

  • The Hill Country SPCA is a private, non-profit, no-kill animal shelter servicing the Texas Hill Country. We are not affiliated with any other shelter or organization and receive no funding from federal or state agencies. We rely strictly on private donations and grants to continue saving the lives of the homeless, abused, and abandoned animals in our area.

We take in animals that are no longer wanted by their owners, as well as dogs and cats listed up for euthanasia at nearby animal control agencies.

  • Our animals come from a wide variety of sources! Our focus is on animals that are at risk of euthanasia with partner shelters, and as space allows we also take in owner surrenders, and on rare occasion injured stray animals. Additionally, we assist with animals needing placement from hoarding situations, cruelty investigations, and puppy mills.

  • Because the Hill Country SPCA is a “No-Kill” shelter, we will never euthanize an animal already in care to make room for another unwanted pet.

Due to our extremely limited resources we ask owners to try and make every effort to find placement for their pet. To help facilitate this the Hill Country SPCA offers “Courtesy Posts” which will list your animal as available for private adoption through you.

When space allows we work off of a waiting list for pets needing surrendered. We often are unable to intake a pet the same day we are contacted.

Please see our Pet Help page for more information.

  • Once an animal is accepted in our adoption program they are not euthanized for time or space reasons. Unless there are medical or behavioral issues that develop deeming an animal un-adoptable, a cat or dog will stay in our adoption program until they find their forever home.

The policy regarding euthanasia of animals under our care is that no animal will be euthanized unless:

    1. Medical Necessity: The animal is proven to have a disease or injury so severe as to be untreatable, incurable, or irreparable by currently available humane medical procedures. At least two Hill Country SPCA directors must agree, AFTER consulting with a licensed veterinarian regarding the animal’s condition, that euthanasia is indicated.

    2. Dangerous aggression beyond rehabilitation: The animal is so vicious as to be a threat to other animals or human companions, and such temperament is deemed not correctable by available professional training methods. At least two Hill Country SPCA directors must agree, after consulting with an Animal Behavior Consultant, that euthanasia is indicated.

  • Our website stays up to date with available animals. Checkout the Adoption page for more information. If you have seen an animal on our social media or elsewhere that are not listed on our website we are not yet accepting applications for them, or they may have already been adopted.

We do sometimes have space to take small animals usually they are animals such as hamster, guinea pigs, rabbits, ferrets and more! If we do, they will be listed under the Small & Furry section!
